EARLY WATER MAIN.
LIFE NOT YET ENDED. RECONDITIONING OF PIPES. Laid forty years ago, the 9-inch cast-iron water main now lying disused in the ground between the Fitzherbert bridge and the old reservoir on the top of Pratt’s Hill, is to be prepared for a further term of service, and a start will be made with its removal on Monday. Forming a section of the first pipeline from Tiritea, this main was first brought into commission in 1897, but has not been used for many years. Originally there was a 7-inch section of piping from Pratt’s Hill to the Tiritea reservoir, but this was replaced in 1904 by a 9-incli section, which was itself lifted in 1910, leaving only the original length which is now to he taken up. This will be reconditioned by being concrete-lined and receiving a new exterior coat, after which it will be laid in Cuba Street, from Rangitikei Street westward, as a feeder main towards the Taknro end.
Meanwhile the City Council is calling tenders for the laying of another 1000 yards of the new 21-inch main, which will continue from the main’s present terminal point to midway between the two lower Tiritea bridges, leaving only a further 2£ miles to be done to complete the whole length of seven miles from the city to the reservoir. ..
