EXTRACTS .FROM “STANDARD.” NOVEMBER 24, 1907. There were said to he 2500 artesian wells on the Heretaunga Plains, Hawke’s Bay. A number of towns in Hawke’s Bay, including Napier, depended upon this source for their water supply. Mr Rudyard Kipling had been awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The Government had granted a £1 for £1 subsidy up to £4OOO as asked for by the Palmerston North Borough Council for the purpose of river protection work. A method of constructing railway rolling stock wheels, which besides being an improvement would save thousands of pounds annually, had been invented in Dunedin. . , , The signing of the Gaming Act had been marked by the closing pf the betting shops in the city of Wellington. , The recent Dominion Exhibition had shown a loss of £90,000. The New Zealand Volunteers had been presented with South African War colours. The colours had cost the Government £156.
