SUCCESSFUL CANDIDATES. TWO SELECTIONS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, Nov. 23. Messrs G. L. Hogben, Auckland University College, and J. N. Matson, Canterbury College,,avere selected to-day as Rhodes Scholars for 1937. There wore in all eight candidates as follows: — Victoria College (Wellington).—-W. I. Combs and R. L. Meek. Auckland College. —G. L. Hogben and D. Walker. Canterbury Colloge.—J. N. Matson and R. Hurst. ■* Otago University.—R. J. M. Burnett and F. T. Lehany. The personnel of the selection committee is: His Excellency the GovernorGeneral, Lord Galway, who presides; Sir Andrew Russell, Hastings; the Rt. Hon. Sir Michael Myers, Chief Justice; the Hon. J. A. Hanan, M.L.C., Chancellor of the University of New Zealand; Professor J. Hight* Christchurch; Mr S. M. Ziman, Cambridge; and Dr A. L, Haslam, Christchurch. ' Under the terms of the trust, the following conditions and qualifications are laid down for the guidance of the selection committee: —Intellectual ability and scholastic attainment; moral character as evidenced in the qualities of true manhood, such as truth, courage, devotion to duty, sympathy for and protection of the weak, kindliness, unselffishness, and fellowship; instincts for leadership and interest in his fellows; physical activity as evidenced by fondness for many outdoor sports. i . , . . Candidates must have passed their nineteenth but not their twenty-fifth birthday, but a candidate whoso ago would be 23 on his entering Oxford would not be considered unless there were very exceptional circumstances. Both the successful candidates have high scholastic and sporting attainments. Mr Matson was an unsuccessful candidate last year. He attended the Huntly School, Marton, in 1926-27, and Christs College from 1927 to 1933. having a distinguished scholastic record. Ho was head prefect in 1933 and a member of the ’ first XV and the first XI. Entering Canterbury College, he took up law studies, and is at present reading for his final section of the LL.B. degree. He was a member of tho Canterbury College first XV m 193536 and 1937. . , Mr Hogben received his education at the Renmera School and Auckland Grammar School, where he was a prefect m 1933. His scholastic record was particularly good, and he was a prominent cricket and hockey player, being a member of both elevens. Attending Auckland University College, he graduated as B.A. Mr Hogben reoresenfed Auckland University College at hockey, and captained the New Zealand Universities hockey team in 195/. He has also represented Auckland at hockey. -
