HOTEL BLAZE.
MANY NARROW ESCAPES. Received November 22, 2.18 p.m. RIO DE JANEIRO, Nov. 22. Mr Merle Webb, the Naval Academy boxing coach, who coached four Olympic teams, narrowly escaped death today, when 61 guests, including 50 society debutantes, who attended last night’s midshipmen ball, were driven from the rooms when fire partly destroved the historic Carvelhall Hotel. The damage is estimated at 100,000 dollars. Firemen found Mr Webb wandering inside, blinded by smoke and unable to locate the exit after he had rushed in in an effort to recover 400 valuable trophies. He saved only a 2ft. bronze statuette, a present from General Pershing, which he was carrying in his arms when he was led out. Ten firemen were cut and bruised also scores of youths. Firemen recovered most of the girls’ luggage. The cause of the fire is unknown.
