FINANCE BILL DISCUSSED AUTHORITY FOR BORROWING In the House of Representatives yesterday consideration was given the Finance Bill after the Minister of Finance (Hon. W. Hash) had moved the second reading. Authority is given in the measure to borrow £6,000,000 for public works purposes' and £2,000,000 for main highways, but the Minister Stated that the money would not be required immediately. Mr Hash also quoted figures in connection with the additional payments from the Hairy Industry Account. Speaking to the measure, the Leader of the Opposition (Hon. A. Hamilton) advocated the abolition of the graduated land tax, which he contended was inequitable. The Coal Mines Amendment Bill, designed to bring about a greater degree of safety in mines, was passed by the House.
