RENEWED ATTACK.

CHINESE CIVILIANS KILLED. SINO-SOVIET PACT. Received August 30, 11.40 a.m. SHANGHAI, Aug. 29. A renewed Japanese artillery bombardment on the South Station killed 300 and wounded 700 Chine’se civilians and shook the International Area, which was patrolled by Welsh Fusiliers.

Japanese warships during the morning shelled the North Station area and Chinese guns replied. Tho Japanese have completed the consolidation of strategic positions on the Lian-shiang front south-west of Pekin. Better weather will enable them to conclude the drive towards Sui-yuan. It is officially announced that the Sino-Soviet non-aggression pact had been signed on August 21. The parties condemn recourse to war and each pledges not to assist the aggressor against the other. Foreign circles consider the pact innocuous, but believe tliat any Sino-Soviet understanding at present will irritate the Japanese.
