LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES.

Apart from tho activity in industrial and trading issues and the neglect of bank shares, there were no special features in the stock and share markets last week. Trading was fairly brisk and a substantial turnover was recorded. The Wellington Stock Exchange showed a turnover of some £35,000, compared with nearly £50,000 for the previous week. The market for gilt-edged securities was fairly active. Government loans wore in .keen demand and prices hardened during the week, but. business was not extensive. Dealings in local-body debentures were confined mainly to Auckland issues. Bank shares wore extremely dull, there being few dealings in Australian issues owing to political uncertainties. Commercial of Australia ivere weak, sales being made at from 17s 11J down to 17s 7d. New South Wales easedto £34 and there was a sale of National of Australasia, £lO paid, at £l4 15s New Zealand ordinnries were firm at from 44s lOd to 455, and tho D mortgage issue was a little easier at from 29s 9d to 29s 6d. Insurance shares were quietly firm. Nationals selling at from IBs 2d to 10s 4d, New Zealand at 64s to 64s 3d, South British »,t £5 0s 6d to £5, and Standard at 58s. Financial and pastoral issues were quiet and little changed. Australian metals issues were generally easier in sympathy with the trend of the base metals market Broken Hill Proprietary showed little change sales ranging between 84s and 83s Id. Broken Hill South weakened from 50s to 48s, and North Broken Hill sold at 78s 3d to 78s. Electrolytic Zinc preference Tanged .from 60s 6d to 59s 9d, and the ordinaries eased from 58s lOd. Mount Lyell fell away from 44s 4d to 435. Mount Morgan eased to 10s lid. Brewery issues were generally firm, but trad ing was restricted. Dominion moved up from 40s 3d to 42s 9d, and Staples to 52s 9d New Zealand sold at 49s 9d to 50s, and the contributing at from 34s id to 34s 6d. Tooth 3 were done at 5Es 3d and 555. Chain stores were fairly active but prices weio irregular. G. J. Coles wore distinctly weaker and fell away on soles from 9Ss to 94s 3d. Woolworths (Sydney) eased from £6 11s. 9d to £6 9s 3d, the first preference selling at 40s 3d to 40s 6d, and the second preference at 28s, Woolworths fN.Z.), were done at £5 2s and £5 3s, and the rights at 82s Wool worths Holdings were firm at lbs 8d to 16s lid. McKenzies Department Stores sold at 86s 9d to 87s 6d. Mac Duffs preferonce eased from 27s 6d to 26s 6d, and Shillings sold at 18s 9d to 19s 3d. Huddart Parker, firmed from 42s 6d to 43s 6d. Gear Meat were definitely firmer and business was done at 19s 6d. New Zealand industrial shares generally showed little change, n fair turnover being recorded at around late rates. An exception was Wilsons Cement, which firmed from 22s to 22s lOd, New Zealand Drugs ranged from 74s 3d to 755. Colonial Sugars advanced from £47 17s 6d to £4B 15s. Dunlop Perdriau were easier, sales being made at from 23s 9d down to 23s 2d. Hume Pipe were firm at up to 21s 2d. Gold mining issues were dull, except Grey River, which firmed from 6s 4£d to 7s 3d.
