South African imports for the first five months of the year, amounting to £40.063,883. show an increase of about £6.500.000 over the corresponding period in 1936. The value of exports was £47,451,357, approximately £3,300.000 less than last year. The balance of trade was, therefore, nearly £10,000,000 less favourable than it was at the end of May, 1936, although there is still a surplus of exports over imports of about £7,400,000.
