At a meeting of the executive of the Palmerston North branch of the Returned Soldiers’ Association a donation of £l4 was received from the trustees of the Women’s National Reserve.
A pile of rubbish in a corrugated iron boiler-room at the rear of Messrs G. H. Bennett’s bookshop in Broadway caught alight at about 2.15 p.m. today, but was discovered bv tho storeman (Mr J. H. Dixon), who promptly summoned the 1* ire. Brigade, and then proceeded to extinguish the flames. The fire was confined to a. corner of the building, and lie 'bad no difficulty in extinguishing the flames before the brigade arrived. The ..sight of a heavy cloud of smoke hovering over a house in Broadway at 10 o’clock last evening caused a pedestrian to summon the Fire Brigade. The services of the brigade’were not required, however.
