HARRIER TITLES

WIN FOR C. WELLER. Ten members of the local Y.M.C.A. Harrier Club travelled to Mniton on Saturday to participate in the West Coast championships. Two teams of five men were entered in the A and B grades. The results of the teams races were as follow: —

A Grade.—Marton. 14pts, 1 ; Palmerston North Y.M.C.A., 42pts, 2; New Plymouth, 53pts, 3. B Grade: Wanganui, 90pts, 1; Palmerston North and Marton 92pts, 2. The Palmerston North A team consisted of C. Weller 1, S. Oxenham 12, N. Hearsey 13, and K. Galloway 16. The B team was J. Woodd 17, C. McVicar 19, I. llanford 27, and It. Moore 29.

About 42 runners, representing clubs from New Plymouth, Wanganui, Alnrftm and Palmerston North, faced the starter. ■ C. Weller took the lead soon after the start, followed closely by five Marton runners in a bunch. J. Scott (Palmerston North) was about eighth at this stage and. retained his position until the end of the second lap, when lie was compelled to retire owing to an injured ankle. Weller continued to increase his lead over the second and third laps, and finished strongly about 250 yards clear of F. Hill (Marton). The Marton men teamed well, filling second, third, fourth, fifth, sixth and eighth positions. Weller’s time of 34min. 26sec. for 6 3-10 miles was excellent, and he is showing even better form than last season. S. Oxenham and N. Hearsey also ran well for Palmerston North, but K. Galloway, handicapped by a poisoned arm, did not run exactly to form. However, in their first effort ‘in the West Coast championships the Palmerston North Club did exceedingly well to obtain second place in both grades. The course of road and cross-countrv consisted of three laps of 2 1-10 miles, but the paddocks were in good condition and fast times were recorded. The folloiving are the placmgs of the first 10 men (36 of the 42 starters finished the course): C. A\ eller (Palmerston North), 34min. 21scc., 1; F. Hill (Marton), 35min. Bsee.. 2; G.
