MOTOR UNION

NORTH ISLAND SECTION. ANNUAL CONFERENCE. Matters of vital interest to the welfare of the motoring community were considered at the 24th annual conference of tho North Island Motor Union in Wanganui this week. Thirty-two delegates, representing tho automobile associations of the North Island, were present, tho total number being 40. There were included six delegates from the South Island Motor Union. A lengthy order paper touching many matters of vital interest to motorists was considered. “That further representations be made to tho transport authorities to have it made compulsory for drivers of motor-lorries to carry lights of an approved type on tho extreme edge of such vehicles,” was a remit submitted by Taranaki and carried unanimously. Horse floats and similar large vehicles were the subject of a, remit from Taranaki, and representations are to be made to owners in an endeavour to have such vehicles painted with a white baud horizontally. It was considered by tho conference that this would help motorists considerably. Following tho adoption of a remit from the Manawatu, representation* are to be made to the Government asking if there is any practical manner of preventing smoke from drifting across a highway in such a way that it is dangerous to traffic. A remit from the Wairarapa recommended that where possiblo road intersections he indicated by painting corner posts white is to be referred to all associations. On the grounds that a motorist s attention should be distracted as little as possible, Mr V. Duff, Taranaki, suggested that when there was a de-re-strictcd area within a borough boundary it should not he necessary to erect a de-restriction sign at tho boundary. Mr Duff moved that the Government be approached with a view to amending the legislation accordingly, but after a discussion the motion was defeated.
