ILLEGAL BETTING.
CONVICTIONS IN N.S.W. « SYDNEY, July 23. Convictions for illegal betting within the Sydney Metropolitan district and Newcastle for the six months to June 30 numbered 1800, and fines amounted to £13,427. The Government contemplates stamping out starting-price betting along the lines of the Queensland legislation, and the matter will be n major issue in the forthcoming State elections.
QUEENSLAND RACING. BRISBANE. July 23. The suppression of starting-price betting shops and other channels for off-the-course betting has been responsible for the complete revival of racing throughout Queensland, declared Mr P. O’Shea, chairman of the Queensland Turf Club, at the annual meeting today. Mr O’Shea pointed out that in 1926 his club had a peak profit of £13,665, but with the spread of betting shops the profits tumbled to £3150 in 1932, £964 in 1933, and £695 in 1934, while in the past year the profit had risen to £7660.
