STRIKE COLLAPSES.
THE TROUBLE AT DARWIN. DARWIN, July 21. The waterfront strike has collapsed, but not before an attempt had been made to wreck the permanent wayleading from the wharf to the goods shed a-quarter of a mile away. The explosives placed on the rails melted in tlie hot sun and no damage resulted.
An earlier message said the terms for settlement of the strike had been forwarded to Canberra. Additional police armed with batons had been requisitioned from the outlying stations. Two leading hotels had been closed and several storekeepers had refused to accept goods unloaded by volunteer labour from the Marella, fearing that they would be declared black.
The strike had developed into a straight-out fight for a higher basicwage for railway and wharf workers.
