DISABLED AT SEA.
PROGRESS OF CITY OF SHANGHAI. Per Presa Association. AUCKLAND, July 21. Prepared to help the City of Shanghai, disabled several hundred miles to the north-west of Pitcairn Island with a fracture of the intermediate tunnel 6haft, the Federal Line steamer Northumberland, which arrived at Auckland from Newport, Monmouthshire, stood by for four hours until the extent of the trouble had been ascertained. The Northumberland cleared Panama shortly after the City of Shanghai, which was travelling from New York to Auckland, and when the shaft of the pf earner broke at midnight on .Tulv 10. the Federal T.ine ship was only 12 hours steaming astern. At the request of the City of Shanghai, the Northumberland waited within two miles of the dir.abled shin, from noon until 4 p.m. on July 11. On receipt of a signal that the trouble could be temporarily remedied, the Northumberland continued on her vovaoe. Exceptionally fine weather ■ with calm seas was being experienced at the time of the accident and this considerably lessened the difficulty or the steamer’s position. Although the City of Glasgow, en route from Montreal to Auckland, did not clear P.-'nama. until more than a week after the Northumberland, it is considered that she reached the City of Shanghai several days ago. Both ships are steaming together at dead slow speed for Auckland, where they are expected on August 4.
