KIWITEA COUNTY

MEETING OF THE COUNCIL. The monthly meeting; of the Kiwiten County Council was held at Kimbolton yesterday, Or L. T. McLean presiding;. Also present were Ors J, Beard. F. E. Tappin, J. H. Williamson, W. Hair, 1). T. Couper. W. It Shaw, W. G. Claplmm and J. A. T. Brown.

CORRESPONDENCE. From the Minister of internal Affairs, with reference to the observance of Arbor Day on August 11 next. —Received. From the Commissioner of Transport, with reference to the council’s application to have certain township areas in the county declared “closely populated localities,” and advising that such restrictions are deemed necessary generally only in fairly expensive built-up areas, and should not apply in scattered country settlements. The writer suggested that the council might review its proposals, and give consideration instead to tne erection of caution signs at suitable places, warning the motorist of the need for especial care due to the presence of pedestrian or oclier local traffic. —Received.

From the Matamnta County Council, requesting the council’s support to tire following resolution: “That this council is of the opinion that the time is over due for the more equitable distribution of motor taxation, and as a means of enabling county councils to efficiently maintain roads other than main highways, we suggest a £ for £ subsidy on all rates for roading purposes.”—The council decided to support the resolution. From Air D. C. Old, requesting permission to re-erect the boundary fence of his property at Cunninghams nearer to the road formation.- —Granted, the work to be approved by the overseer. From the Public Works Department, advising payment of balance of subsidies on the maintenance of main highways for the year ended March 31, amounting to £746 3s Bd.—Received. A letter was received from Air Ormond Wilson, M.P., on behalf of the Rangiwahia Ski Club, stating: 1 “You are no doubt aware that, during the winter months, considerable 'numbers of people visit the Ruahines beyond Rangiwahia for the purpose of ski-ing. At the present time the grounds are only accessible by a track which takes a fairly long and very steep route. As a result of surveys made by the Conservator of Forests, Palmerston North (a member of the club) a much better route has been found and a considerable amount of work has been done in constructing the track from the bush edge up to the ski-ing grounds. As, however, there is a legal road from the present road up .to the bush edge (a distance of some 50 to 60 chains) it has been thought that perhaps this road could be constructed, and so make the ski-ing grounds still more accessible. I anticipate that the club would eventually build a hut at the termination of the road for the convenience of skiers. This road would not, of course, be of any immediate benefit to the settlers in the district and, therefore. I am hoping that the Public Works Department would make a free grant for its construction. However, the application would have to be made formally by your council, and the maintenance would have to be done by you. I am prepared to take up the matter with the Minister of Public Works, and have already discussed it with his department, so that if your council would take the necessary formal steps in the matter, I will he glad to do the rest.” —lt was decided to apply to the- Minister of Public Works for a free grant to complete Renfrew Road to the bushline. Air K. W. Hansen, Kimbolton, wrote offering to pay half the cost of a concrete footpath if the council would provide one in front of his premises. Cr Hair reported on the matter and the council resolved that it would be unwise to comply with the request, as the main highway fronting Air Hansen’s premises would need to be regraded and formed before it could be sealed.
