BOXING.

I’ATEA TOURNAMENT. MANAWATU CONTESTANTS. Four Manawatu boxers took part in the tournament at Patea on Monday evening. Hans Christensen featured in the star bout with Clarrie Gordon, the New Zealand representative at the Olympic Games, being unsuccessful in a good hard fight. D. Goughian secured a draw, while J. Te Tau and McLach)an were defeated. Details are as follow; — Clarrie Gordon, 9.6, v. H. Christensen (lightweight champion, Palmerston North) 9.9.—G00d, hard fighting by both men was the feature of the bout. Gordon’s footwork w as pretty to watch, a.nd it enabled him to penetrate Christensen’s guard on several occasions. Gordon’s body blows were very solid. Christensen kept Gordon off with straight lefts to the face, but Gordon forced the fight and, accidentally bringing his head up into Christensen’s face in th© fourth round, opened a cut between Christensen’s eyes. The referee stopped the fight and awarded the decision to Gordon. D. Coughlan (Manaivatu) 9.2, v. J. Fitzwater (Patea.) 9.0. —Both boys mixed it well, Fitzwater . foicing ■Coughlan to cover up. Fitzwater landed heavy rights to the body. In the second round both led rights and clinched, Coughlan landing rights to Fitzwater’s jaw. In the third round Coughlan was warned for hitting with the open glove, but connected with rights to Fitzwater’s face. Good fast boxing was provided by both in the last round, good footwork being shown by Fitzwater. A draw was tho popular decision. „ „ E. Gishard (Tariki) 10.0 v. J. Te Tau (Manawatu) 9.13. —Te Tau took tho fight to Gishard who covered up. Gishard’s rights to the face stopped Te Tau, who let his guard drop, allowing Gishard to use liis right to advantage. Heavy left swings by both were exchanged and saw the end of the bout with Gishard the winner. Bert Madden (N.Z. flyweight champion, Hawera) 8.0, v. McLachlan (Manawatu) 8.1. —Madden showed good boxing, going in with lefts to the face each time he came in. McLachlan landed heavy rights to Madden’s body, but Madden took the fight to McLachlan, forcing him to cover up. McLachlan straightened Madden with a heavy left to the face. Good fighting by both men was 6cen in the last round, Madden missing with left swings, but emerging the winner.
