UNUSUAL CASE.
ACCUSED’S DENIAL. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July 22. A charge of demanding £IOO from Alexo Dilopoulo with intent to steal was denied in the Supreme Court today by Albert Henry Webber, a labourer. before Air Justice Fair. Air V. R. Meredith, for the Crown, said it was alleged that on the night of Saturday. May 1. during Carnival Week nt Dargaville, Webber entered a marquee where Dilopoulo, a Greek roared in Egypt, was conducting a show. Displaying a card printed “DetectiveSergeant Hall, Auckland,” Webber complained of misrepresentation in regard to the act “The Limbless Woman.” also that the show was indecent. Ho asked Dilopoulo to go to the police station, and on reaching the building Webber asked for £IOO, saying that for that amount- Dilopoulo would not he arrested and deported. Pilonou'o gave evidence that when nccipe l asked for the £IOO lie became suspici ms and a deed him to return to the marquee, as his wife was treasurer. Later, his wile .sent for the police, but accused disappeared. Webber staled in evidence that the whole affair was a joke. He did not deny that he represented himself as a detective, hut denied demanding money. The jurv lias retired.
