DESCENT INTO ETNA.
Received .Julv 21, 1.10 p.m. CATANIA, July 20. The first descent of the central crater of Etna was successfully carried out by three gas-masked undergraduates and the custodian of the observatory there. Lowering themselves by ropes, they took photographs and scientific measurements, discovering galleries previously unknown. They returned to the surface unaffected by the fumes.
