DISABLED VESSEL.

BREAKDOWN IN PACIFIC. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, July’ 20. The story of a breakdown of tlio engines of the steamer City of Shanghai several hundred miles from Pitcairn Island, when en route from New York to Auckland, was brought to Auckland by the Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Waimana. The Waimana, which tkas travelling from Liverpool to Auckland) was for a time in close communication with the disabled vessel.

Previously expected to reach Auckland to-day, the City of Shanghai, of the American and Australian Line, is now steaming across the South Pacific at dead-slow speed, accompanied by her sister ship, the City of Glasgow. Both steamers will now arrive at Auckland on August 4. The City of Glasgow, en route from Montreal to Auckland, was originally scheduled to reach port next Wednesday. The Waimana began to watch the City of Shanghai closely when, on July 11, a wireless message from the steamer stated that the intermediate tunnel shaft covering of the propeller shafting had teen fractured. Later advice, however, revealed that the Federal Line steamer Northumberland, also en route to Auckland, was standing by the disabled City of Shanghai. The Northumberland, which will arrive at Auckland to-morrow from Newport, Monmouthshire, waited for four hours before continuing her voyage. A further message indicated that temporary repairs had been effected and the Waimana decided not to steam to the City of Shanghai. Within a day or two the City of Glasgow had reached the disabled steamer and began the long and slow task of a three weeks’ escort. It is not considered that the fracture will endanger the City of Shanghai which, presumably, will be docked on arrival at Auckland.
