SOCCER TEST.
AUSTRALIA WIN
ENGLAND HELD AT BAY,
SYDNEY, July 20
In the third soccer Test against England, at Newcastle to-day, Australia won by 4 goals to 3. Australia led 2—l at half-time.
Tliis was the final and deciding Test and was witnessed by one of the largest crowds ever assembled in a Newcastle sports ground. The Englishmen were weakened by the absence of Joy and Finch, while the Australians were strengthened by the inclusion of the goalkeeper, J. McNabb. . - The Australians, led by, G. Smith, instead of IV. Coolalian, experimented with the half-back line, and this worked out satisfactorily. The game was fast. The Englishmen were a long time settling down, and allowed the Australians to get rather far ahead, but late in the second half the tourists launched a series of terrific attacks, and quickly reduced Australia’s advantage from 4—l to 4—3. The Englishmen were then held at hay by the magnificent defending of McNab. Scorers for Australia were G. Smith (2), and Hughes and Wilkinson one each. For England goals were scored by Riley and Mathews (2).
