PROVISION OF WORK.
CITY COUNCIL’S' ACTION
RESERVE NEAR SPORTSGROUND
Following the conference with the acting-Minister of Labour (Hon. P. C. Webb) recently, when it agreed to provide employment for 170 men in four-monthly rotational periods, subsidised to the" extent of £4 per week per man by the Employment Promotion Fund with the object of taking men off of sutenance, the Palmerston North City Council, last evening, decided to proceed with the laying out of a further 12 acres of land adjoining the Sportsground. This is to give employment to 25 men in each two months, the council having accepted the offer of the department to meet 100 per cent, of the labour costs. The offer of the department to subsidise the employment of labour in cleaning up, levelling and topdressing the area on both sides of tho entrance road, together with preparatory work for planting, was accepted. It was decided to inform tho Palmerston North Golf Club that an offer to supply subsidised labour for tlie construction of a small nine-bole golf course on the present links had been received from the Department of Labour. that tlie additional cost in wages would bo approximately. £6O, and that the club be requested to state on what terms they would undertake to repay this amount if the work is proceeded with.
