Air L. AI: Justice, his friends will be pleased to learn, is now progressing well in a private hospital after undergoing a serious operation last week. The acting-Prime Minister (Hon. P. Fraser) has received a cable from Hon. R. Semple in Sydney, stating that his health had improved considerably. Ho leaves for the western districts to-day. Air Fraser has replied expressing his pleasure at Air Semple’s improvement in health.—Press Association.

Mr B. H. Gavin, of the Palmerston North staff of- the Bank of New Zealand, has been transferred to the Woodville branch, and Mr B. V. Davis, of Raetihi, will fill the vacancy in Palmerston North. Mr H. Hall, who has been relieving in Woodville, returns to Wellington in a few days’ time. Hon. It. Semple, Minister of Public Works, who is at present in Australia, has advised the Acting-Prime Minister, Hon. P. Fraser, that he had a good voyage from Wellington to Sydney and that his health has improved considerably. Mr Semple intends to leave for the Western districts to-day. Mr Fraser has replied to Mr Semple’s cable message expressing pleasure at Mr Semple’s improvement in health. The Superior General of the Society of Mary, more commonly known as the Marist Fathers, has nominated the Very Rev. Father W. J. Schaefer, S.M., as his representative at the Roman Catholic centennial celebrations in New Zealand next year. Father Schaefer, who was born in the diocese of ’Cologne, Germany, came to New Zealand as a student about 30 years ago and completed bis ecclesiastical studies at the Marist Fathers’ Seminary at Meeanee, Hawke's Bay. He remained in the Dominion until he was appointed to the General Council of the Marist Fathers in Rome about two years ago. He rendered distinguished service to the Roman Catholic Church in New Zealand and was for a period superior of the Marist Novitiate, Highden, Palmerston North. Father Schaefer was a distinguished preacher and was renowned as a scholar, architect and musician.
