(From Our Oivn Correspondent.) WIIAKARONGO, July 17. A dance held in tho hall for the School Queen funds, was arranged by Mr W. Brown. Miss Tretnewan and Mr Watson won the Lucky Gay Gordons, and Miss Drinkwatcr and Mr Stecre, the Monte Carlo. There was a large attendance at the function arranged by Mr N. Cruden for Hall Queen funds. A number were visitors from outside districts. An exhibition of tho seantruiblias was given by Miss Joan Lynch; Mr 11. Lester played, two popular saxophone solos; Miss Francis Lynch f-fj- 1 '* 0 two amusing elocutionary numbers, for lowed by Mr Claude Henderson, dressed in Russian costume, executing clever tapdances; vocal solos were given by Mr G. Whitolock, and Miss Lucy Cronin prc\ sonted Highland dancing; Mr 1 1 . Godson played on the xylophone and Mr Cronin sang popular airs; Mr Woodham, mouthorgan champion, was a popular performei, and Mr A. Ganderton’s playing on the piano-accordion was enjoyable. Messrs \> nson and Sutton brought down the house with a comedy turn; a tiny tap-danccr in a chic gold and red suit, Joy Burrell, captivated her audience. The final iuunbci was a sailor ballet by seven pupils 01. Miss ( Juno Scott. The accompanists were Misses | J. Scott, L. Cronin, Messrs N. Cruden, A. Gandcrton. _ . . Mrs W. Byers, who is in a private hospital in Palmerston North, is niatong good progress toward recovery. Mrs H. McGregor, who has been staying with Mr and Mrs 11. R. Smith, on To Matai Roach has returned to her home in Auckland. Mrs W. McMurrav has her sister, Mrs IN. Ilcnrichsen, staying with her at present. A large number attended the Saturday night dance for School Queen funds. Mr N. Smith was celebrating his coming oi age, and the two functions were combined. Mr F. Eagle was the M C. The sponsors of the sports day have ovciy reason to be proud of the success of their venture. Tho first attraction was a novel form of basketball in which the boys played the girls’ team. All enjoyed the exhibition, tho players being:—Girls, Misses E. Woodd, J. Wood, M. Radomski, C Vantier, A. Olsen, H. Wood, L. Speedy, J. Smith, and W. Vauticr._ Boys, Messrs K. Knudsen, N. Speedy, K. Puklowski, N. Smith, J.* Woodd, T. Esplin, A. Frith, YV. Lacov and 11. Cudby. The half-time score was 7—o and final 9—5 in tho girls’ favour. In the tug-of-war, for which there were 6 entries, the results were: Ruakara (Messrs VV. and P. Tait, C. Dixon, and C. Seyelin) beat School B (Messrs K. Puklowski, H. Cudby, R. Scorer, D. AIcDowell); School A (Messrs H. Schwass, Clarence Puklowski, N. Smith and N. Speedy) beat Ping Pong (Messrs T. Esplin. E. Hornibrook. IV. Bainbridge and F. Eagle); Machinery Exchango (Messrs A. Gillies. A. Long. L. Ax, and G. Anderson) beat Cook’s (Messrs G. Brogdcn, P. Wild, R. Alexander, and V. Harriman); Ruakara beat School A, and in the final beat Machinery Exchange. Messrs R. Lacey and N. Speedy arranged the event, Mr E. Ilcncgjiati was judge and starter, and Mr W. Jones announcer and timekeeper. Mr S. Oxonham arranged the barrier race, over a distance of five miles. There were fourteen starters, the limit man. Holmes, reaching the school first. The trophy was donated by Mr Burling. In the basketball match against Aslihurst tho B team went down by 17 goals to 12, ibe half-time score being 9 —2. Tho Ashlmrst players were Afisses M. Woodroofe, AT. ’Templeton, K. Storcv, D. Hacked. D. McKinley. 1.. Hacked. G. Doreen, L. Trcnicwan, and L Woodroofe, while the local girls were Alisscs V. Puklowski, M. Hodgson, I, Johanson. G. Jones, T. Ncwcombo, L. Smith, J. Harvey, E. Vautier, and 11. Harrowfield. The referee was Airs A. Frith. The presence of about a dozen pipers, who played during Ihc afternoon, added greatly to tho enjoyment. Later in tho day, these men challenged the basketball girls to a match and won by 5 goals to 4. There were only two starters for the wheelbarrow race, I bis was. won by S. Oxenham wheeling Afiss 11. Wood, with j. Wood wheeling Miss A. Olson a close second. Six children entered for the decorated bicycle section, and Ken Puklowski's entry, wearing purple and gold, was first, with Alav Johanson second. Hie prizes in this section were donated by Mrs Oxenbam. Tho biggest “draw” of the afternoon was the dancing section. Air J. Lynch did yeoman service toward tho success of this venture. Entries totalled nearly 100. and thanks arc due to all who helped by donations and to the Pipe Band for their assistance. The stewards in eliarge, Messrs J. Lynch and Geo. Richardson, deserve tho thanks of flic committee. Aliss Barbara Evans deserves thanks of all for judging the events.
