MARTIN BEATS McMAHON. AUSTRALIAN’S DECISIVE WIN. Mooting Billy .Martin, the Australian, in a boxing match at Hastings on Saturday night, Jack McMahon, ot Palmerston North, suffered a defeat on points. In the last round the Australian punished McMahon severely and, with the Palmerston North boxer’s chin undefended, landed several heavy punches which sent him to the mat. McMahon rose at the count of three, but went down under another onslaught and the final gong sounded when the referee’s count had reached six. 4

A right to the jaw, a. left to the face and then another right to the jaw by Martin in the seventh round gave some persons in the audience the impression that the fight was nearly ended, but McMahon showed fine stamina and was not afraid to meet Martin on even terms for the rest of the round. In the eighth round Martin attempted to use his right, hut McMahon beat him with a straight left and steadied the attack. McMahon was aggressive all through the round. At the close of the ninth round Martin used two lei t rips and was then attempting to land an uppercut. McMahon took the tenth round through persistent attacks, although Martin was avoiding a number of McMahon’s rights, moving inside them. Martin took the fight to McMahon in the eleventh round and after rocking the Palmerston North man attempted to knock him out, but although lie used everything in his power could not do it. McMahon’s punches lacked theii customary power in the twelfth round, and in the thirteenth Martin opened activities with a right to the head and a left to the body. McMahon landed a heavy right, but Martin retaliated with a left and a right.. McMahon made the other miss, but Martin was lighting well and used two jelts to the body, lauding another left in the face as the gong went. In the fourteenth round McMahon improved, making the other miss and then scoring points witli his left. Alartin went at McMahon in the final round and rocked him with a left and a right McAlahon, then on the ropes, also suffered a right to the jaw. Another right and McMahon went to the mat. At the count of three lie rose, but Alartin gave him no vest and, following another barrage, McAlahon dropped again. When the final gong went the referee had counted up 'to six.

lu a preliminary, IT. Pearson (Palmerston North) and 11. McTvor (Hastings) met at even weights to provide 1 an interesting bout. 1 n the first round both used two hands and in the second Pearson went for the body, the other for the head. The third round was good also, Melvor taking the decision.
