SCOTTISH MATCH
GALLICHAN BOWLS WELL.
SIX WICKETS FOR 40 RUNS,
VIVIAN AT TOP OF HIS FORM.
(From the Special Correspondent of the 1 United Press Association with the team.)
GLASGOW, July 18.
The wicket was soft and the weather fine for the match New Zealand v. Scotland, which opened yesterday. The attendance was nearly 5000. Scotland, batting first, scored 237. At stumps New Zealand had lost four wickets for 145 runs.
After Hadlee had been tried without success as an opening bowler for New Zealand the attack was borne by Dunning, Vivian, and Gallichan. A feature of the day was the success of the slow left-handers. Gallichan achieved his best performance since tiie first match against Surrey. Three catches were taken from him in the slips. Good catching also assisted Vivian. Sale acceptances were made at long-on and mid-on by Carson and Gallichan. 'The Edinburgh and Glasgow papers unanimously call the game a Test. It certainly had that atmosphere at times. The Scottish scoring was very slow, Mitchell-lnnes being a dashing exception. He gave a brilliant exhibition of strong fronGwioket play, marked by beautiful drives on both sides of the wicket. He scored a six, two fours and a two in one over off Vivian, four fours in one over off Dunning, another six off Dunning, and a third off Gallichan. Heggie and Tod were slow, but played a useful innings. New Zealand’s batting was distinguished by the dashing vigour of Vivian. The left-hander was at the top of his form, racing past his half-cen-tury in just over half an hour. He had then hit eight fours nnd a six. Altogether there were 10 fours and two sixes in liis 75 out of the first 98 runs
scored. Wallace was more restrained than usual, but played confident and correct cricket. He compiled a sound 50 in an hour and n quarter, including six lours. Scotland’s liigli-class slow bowlers, a left-hander, Melville, and a righthander, Peebles, probably bowled as well as any pair the New Zealand team has met in England. 'The New Zealand team is: Page, Vivian, Moloney, Wallace. Kerr, Hadlee, Donnelly, Gallichan, Lowry, Dunning, Carson. Details:— SCOTLAND. First Innings.
