INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL

RESULT OF BALLOT. NEW BUILDING FAVOURED. The ballot taken by the Wanganui Education Board among school committee members in Palmerston North on the question of a site for the proposed intermediate school resulted in the rejection of the proposal to adapt the- College Street primary school for the purpose and favouring the erection of a new building on a central site. The voting was: For a new building 22 For College Street 13 TAKARO "SCHOOL SITE.

CABINET APPROVES GRANT

FIVE ACRES INVOLVED,

The following telegram has been received by Air j. Hodgens, ALP., li'om the Minister of Education, Hon. P. Fraser: “1 have pleasure in informing you that Cabinet has approved of a grant for the purchase of site lor a school at Takaro.”

When the subject was referred to Colonel J. H. Whyte, a member of the Wanganui Education Board, today, he explained that the land was five acres in extent, the owners being Alessrs Joseph Nathan and Co. It lies on the Botanical Road frontage, opposite Chelwood Street and is relatively high ground, besides which it is the site which the Takaro Progressive Association had been advocating as tlie most desirable in that district. Another site had been considered at ono period, Colonel Whyte added, but had been abandoned as it was thought too damp. I The provision of a school in the Takaro area would relieve the congestion at tlie Central School, where the roll this year had risen to over 800 and extra accommodation had had to bo provided in the use of the Presbyterian Church Hall in Nikau Street, Colonel Whyto said. The other member of the Wanganui Board for this district, Mr M. H. Oram, explained that the acquisition of the land was a step toward the time when a school would be required for Takaro. The fact that the land was to lie secured did not mean that the school would ho built, for there would he further negotiations necessary, if the school was to be erected, for a grant to meet the cost of construction. The question was further bound tip with that of the provision of an intermediate school in the city. Something had to he done beforo the beginning of next year, but the two measures could not go forward at once, Whether or not the establishment of the Takaro school would involve the postponement of the provision of an intermediate school remained to be seen. The Education Board would be discussing the matter at its next monthly meeting. “Either we have nn intermediate school or we have the school at Takaro,” concluded Mr Oram. Great pleasure at the developments reported was expressed by the president of the, Takaro Progressive Association, Air E. H. Smith. He said that the membership of the association had this year risen to over the 300 mark, and ono of tlie main reasons for the support being given the association was the representations that wore being mado by it for a school in the district. The association had selected the site now approved as tho most suitable and a committee from the association had inspected it, in company with tho member for the district, Mr Hodgens, last year. The association then made representations to the Minister of Education, through Air Hodgens, for tlie establishment of the school, at the same time approaching the Wanganui Education Board. Tho association was of the opinion that, apart altogether from the provision of an intermediate school, Takaro should he provided with a primary school, and it was the intention of tho association to expend every effort in an endeavour to see tlie school established.
