“OFFICIALLY LOST”
3.45 P.M. EDITION
STORY ABOUT MRS PUTNAM. (United Press Association—By ElectricTelegraph .—Copyright.) Received July 17. 1.55 p.m. HONOLULU, July 16. An explanation is made of the rumours based on the assertion by the Auckland radio amateur that lie heard a ’plane from the Lexington report that they had sighted Airs Putnam. The opinion is expressed that it was probably due to the amateur missing a word* in a conversation between the ’plane and the Lexington. The Lexington plans to end the search to-morrow due to her fuel being exhausted. Blistering heat and rain squalls delayed the search to-day, which is now considered hopeless. A San Francisco message says that tho Chronicle learned unofficially that Mrs Putnam was “engaged in a high patriotic service that is better undisclosed in detail.” recalling the rumours that she intended to become officially lost for the purpose of claiming islands in the Pacific.
