MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

Charged with failure to provide his wife with adequate maintenance, Alfred Albert Polkinliorne, aged 56. appeared on warrant before Mr J. L. Stout, S.M., in the Magistrate’s Court, yesterday. At tho request of Mr T. F. Rolling, who appeared on his behalf, defendant was remanded until Wednesday next. “This man made himself objectionable to men and women using the thoroughfares of Broadway and King Street at 6.30 yesterday. He wanted to fight men and shake hands with women, to whom ho spoke in endearing terms,” stated Senior-Sergeant Mclntyre, when Ronald Ridge, a labourer, aged 36, appeared on charges of behaving in a disorderly manner while drunk, and of committing an offence in King Street. Accused said he had no recollection of what had happened, and asked for a chance, as ho had permanent employment awaiting him. “These men always have permanent work when they are brought up by the police. AVhy don’t they go to it before that?” commented the Magistrate, who said accused had been making a nuisance of himself. Accused was fined £2, in default 14 days’ imprisonment, on each charge. Time in which to pay was refused. Frederick Bowles, a caretaker and labourer, aged 62, for whom Mr G. Crosslev appeared, came before Messrs N. Blackmore and C. H. Whitehead, TP ’s on two serious charges. De-tective-Sergeant Meiklejohn conducted tho case for the police and, after evidence had been heard, accused pleaded not guilty, being committed to the Supreme Court at Palmerston North next week for trial. . The hearing of evidence against Charles Frederick Ned Johnson a labourer aged 39. on a serious charge, was concluded yesterday afternoon before Messrs J. T. Bosworth a.nd J. H. Or uifc'k shank, J.P.’s. Accused, foi whom Air J. M. Gordon appeared, pleaded not guilty and was committed to the Supreme Court at Pnlinci ston North for trial.
