IN BANKRUPTCY.
LABOURER’S PETITION. A meeting of creditors in the bankrupt estate of Albert Ivreft, a labourer, of Palmerston North, lapsed yesterday for the want of a quorum. Mr E. C. Litchfield, D.0.A., presided. In his sworn statement bankrupt said that he commenced business in Palmerston North as a dyer and cleaner in 1922. For some years the business was fairly successful and he was able to pay his way and maintain his family. In 1924 ho purchased a house in Ferguson Street and paid £2OO on account of the purchase money, and later paid further instalments off the mortgage amounting to about £7O in all. In 1926 his wife became ill and was under a doctor’s care in hospital almost continuously till 1933. In that time she underwent four serious operations. Owing to his wife’s illness ho was compelled to engage help in the shop and also in the house, and during the period his business went back and he fell behind with his payments. “At the end of 1932,” he added, “I was compelled to give up business and went on relief. In 1933 the house I had purchased was taken by the second mortgagee. I was on relief till November, 1935, and then I was employed on public works for 12 months. I was then on sustenance till the end of 1936, since when I have again boon on public works. I have four children, all attending school, and I am unable to make any offer to my creditors. All my liabilities are for 1 debts incurred while I was in business as a dyer and cleaner. As I am being pressed by spmc of my creditors I have no option but to file.” The total amount owing of £230 4s was to unsecured creditors, while there were no assets. The principal creditors wore W. M. Henderson, builder, Palmerston North, £100; Jackson and Craven, grocers, Palmerston North, £3l 8s Gd •’ Palmerston North Hospital Board,’£39 2s Gd; Dr. E. C. Barnett, £22 10s ; Northeote Hospital and X-ray department, £lO 10s; Messrs Mncky. Logan and Caldwell, merchants, Auckland. £8 11s Gd; Dr. Lett, Palmerston North, £3 2s.
