BOWLERS UNLUCKY

CRICKET AGAINST DERBY. DOMINION NEEDS 403. FIELDING VERY GOOD. (From the Special Correspondent of the United Press Association with the Team.) (By Electric Telegraph—Copyright.) Received June 8, 9.10 a.m. LONDON, June 7. On the second day of the cricket match between Deroy and New Zealand, Derby completed its best second innings score of the season on a perreet wicket after being given a magniiicent start by Snut.i and Alderman. Lhe former batted attractively, hitting a dozen lours and a six. Alderman alternated Letwecu grave and gay and compi.od liis second highest scute in liis rust-class cricket career, staying nearly five hours and hitting ten lours and three sixes. The New Zealand bowlers stuck gamely to their difficult task, dismissing seven batsmen in three hours alter lunch. Cowie bowled with tons of energy, but lie did not have an ounce of luck, several times shaving the stumps and being snicked past the fieldsmen. Dunning also bowled better than his final figures suggest. Page was never scored from Irecly. Vivian captured a valuable wicket, while Donnelly was inexpensive and was effective after tea. Only during the first-wicket partnership did the bowling appear to be mastered. The fielding was unwavering and a brilliant catch was taken at first slip by Page. One thousand schoolboys were given a special holiday for . the occasion, which swelled the crowd to 3000. New Zealand, after a tiring day in the field, were left with almost an hour to bat, but the bad light stopped the play. Details:—

A redeeming feature of the first day’s play at Derby was the interest taken in the visit of the New Zealanders, the gate being £l9B compared with £3O for the best day at Northampton. The players all attended a testimonial dance when the guest of honour was Les Townsend, a former coach at Auckland. On Sunday, the New Zealanders were the guests of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire at the historic castle of Cliatsworth where they received the greatest kindness. They were shown the famous statuary and painting treasures and conducted over the extensive and beautiful grounds by the Duchess.
