SCONE STONE.

STORY OF PLOT. The Dean of Westminster (Dr Foxley Norris) reveals in the new issue of the Church of England year book that as recently as two or three years ago there was a plot (“known to the police, but to few others”) to carry back to Scotland the historic Scone Stone in Westminster Abbey, This stone, which bears the tradition that Jacob slept on it at Bethel, was used for the crowning of the Scottish kings and was bromdit to the Abbey by Edward 1., in 129 G. The plot referred to by Dr Norris was alleged to have been inspired by a section of Scottish Nationalists who a few years ago conceived a scheme for forcibly removing the stone from its place beneath tie Coronation Chair and depositing it with the Lord Provost of Perth".

The project wa.s not spoken of in terms of practical joking, but as a serious proposition and with the definite object of showing that the. newly-form-ed Nationalists meant ‘ business. The men were said to number 13. News of their alleged intention reached the police; precautions were taken and nothing further was heard of the plot. • •
