LAST WEEK’S BUSINESS AND PRICES.

Apart from Government loans and a few leading investment shares which showed firmness, the stock and share markets showed a weaker trend last week. There was fairly heavy selling and a substantial turnover was recorded in Wellington, Auckland and Christchurch. The Wellington sales totalled over 16,000 shares and, with £4250 worth of Government stock, the aggregate value of the turnover was approximately £27,000, As in Australia, there was a keen demand tor Government loans at firmer rates, but supplies were well held and business was restricted. Dealings in local body debentures were confined to Auckland issues. AVith the exception of New Zealand issues, banks were dull, and inclined to weaken. The announcement 'in the directors’ report of increased ! profits accentuated the firming of New I Zealands, which advanced from 44s 6d | to 45s Bd, a gain of Is 2d. The D long ; term mortgage shares of the Bank of New Zealand improved to business at ■27 s 7d. National Bank of New Zealand were firmer on the week and sold at froni 64s 3d to 655. Australasias were steady at £l2 12s; New South AA’ales eased to £36 10s for an odd lot; Commercial of Australia sold at from 19s 2d to 18s lid, with later business up to 19s Id. E.S. and A. were lower at £6 ss; National of Australasia, £5 paid, eased to £7 8:s, and Union weakened to £ll 2s 6d and £ll Is 6d. New Zealand Insurance firmed during the week from 62s 6d to. 64s 3d. a gain of Is 9(1. South British touched 955, with a later sale threepence lower, and Nationals sold at 10s 9Ad to 17s. The increased dividend failed to improve Goldsbrough Mort more than a point or two, business being done at iron! 37s 8d to 3Ss. New Zealand Guarantee Corporation firriiod .to ss. * Brewery shares were active, particularly New Zealand, which moved up on the announcement of the new issue to 68s, but eased later to 64s 9d. They were sold ex rights and cum dividend at from 51s 3d to 525, but weakened later to 49s 9d. The rights were traded actively at from 25s down to 22s 6d to 22s 9d. Staples were firmj.y traded at from 52s 3d to 54s 6d, with later sales down to 535. Dominion Breweries firmed on sales from 44s 6d to 45s 3d. C* L. .1 lines sold at 30s and 31s lOd, and Tooths at 55s 9d to 555. Irregularity in the metals market was reflected in the shares of Broken Hill Proprietary, Electrolytic Zinc and Mount The two first-mentioned showed relatively minor fluctuations, but Mount Lyell were definitely weaker on heavy selling at from 45s 4d down to 42s iOd, a loss of 2s 6d on the week. Broken Hill South were actively traded, and were a shade firmer at the close of an irregular week. North Broken Hill sold on Saturday at 725. Mount Morgan weakened from 13s lid to 12s lOd, but recovered some of the lost ground after the announcement of tile dividend. Martha Mines were very weak and fell away from 16s 8d to 14s Bd, recovering later -to 15s. Other gold mining issues were dull. Some activity was seen in G. J. Coles and AVoolworths. The former sold to £5 10s, but eased later. AVoohvorths (Sydney) sold at from £7 3s to £6 19s, and the New Zealand issue at £7 17s to £B. Industrial issues were generally on the quiet side, except Dunlop-Perdriau, which advanced strongly from 21s 3d to 235. Colonial Sugar were also firmer. i
