WANGANUI MEETING. FIRST DAY’S RACING. CLARION CALL’S HURDLES. STEEPLES TO ROYAL BANQUET. (By “Spectator. ”) Though heavy l-ain had fallen overnight and there were further squally showers with hail, in the morning, the weather improved for the opening of the Wanganui Jockey Club’s winter meeting on Saturday, only later to become very cold and showery. There was a fairly good attendance considering the conditions, and the track, though soft, was in good order. Tlie totalisator handled £12,822, compared with £12.403 on the first day last year, an increase of £419. Clarion Call won the Century Hurdles after a very fine display of jumping and the favourite, Royal Banquet, got home in the Grandstand Steeplechase. ' Spender brought off a big surprise in winning the Balgownie Hack Handicap. Subsequent to the running of the Grandstand Steeplechase, W. Bowden, the rider of Riotous, was .suspended for a month as the result of a happening just prior to the last fence in this race. FIRST EVENT TO ETHIOP. Ethiop, after being well placed all the way, improved upon his second at Foxton to finish on better than . the favourite, Hunting Queen, when the pair led the. remaining three runners up the straight in the Purua Hack Hurdies. . Red Manfred, carrying a big weight, led over most of the journey and was still in the running at the straight entrance, but dropped back when Ethiop and Petrarch made forward moves on the outside of Hunting Queen and the leader. Petrarch, in behind the favourite and Ethiop when they took the last fence, crashed heavily when he struck the hurdle, which had previously been hit hard. Carroll, his rider, received a nasty fall, but escaped unhurt. Petrarch was led back to the birdcage limping badly, and though he had an injured shoulder, the trouble is not expected to prove serious. Kentucky Song was prominent, in the early running, but soon faded. GOLD MISSION’S RUN. Gold Mission, winner Of the seven furlongs Borough Hadicap at Egmont, and who had finished fast into third place in the Kebbell Memorial at Foxton after being late to get through in the straight, was always well placed in the \\ inter Oats, and, from fourth position at the straight entrance, came through with a solid finishing effort to beat the topweight, Ben Braggio, who had led on the rails from the start, in the run to the post. Notium, after being slow away at the start, made an unsuccessful attempt to overtake the leaders at the straight entrance, but finished two lengths behind the first pair. Tonnerre was on level terms witli Ben Braggie in front of the rest of the field for most of the journey, but the Waikato horse, who looked a likely winner in the middle stages of the race, swung out wide entering the straight, and was beaten into fourth place. Hunting Lodge was never prominent and Solaria, left at the start, tailed the field all the way. Ben Braggie was responsible for a surprisingly good effort, it being this class sprinter’s first start since his win at the Manawatu meeting. CLARION CALL’S HURDLES. Withdrawn from his Great Northern engagements. Clarion . 'Call, who lost his rider when in a winning position in the first event of the Ellerslie double last year, gave a splendid exhibition of jumping to win the Century Hurdles by half a length from the Hastings horse John Charles in a hard finish up the straight. Contact, after being out in front for the first round, was finished with. His earliest attendants were John Charles, Clarion Call, and Sporting Song. Ruaform made a forward move early, but failed to go on with it, and-eventually finished in fifth place. Sporting Song, going solidly, jumped to the front over the fence in the straight at the completion of the first round, but then lost liis rider who had lost the reins before taking off. Clarion Call then went to the front from Brigadore, Journet, who had moved up from last position, and John Charles. Brigadore went to the front for a brief period, but dropped back three furlongs from home, where Journet, in fourth place, began to tire. Clarion Call and John Charles had the finish on their own, with Brigadore, who had come again, six lengths further back. Journet was fourth and Ruaform (last year s winner) next. \ SURPRISE BY SPENDER. Spender., trained at Bulls, who finished on. strongly in fifth place in his race at Foxton, the first after a spell, brought off a big surprise in the Balgownie Hack Handicap. Prominently placed in the leading bunch from the start, he drew up to the leader Eara, another outsider, . turning mto the straight, and the pair were fighting it out when Myriam, who had got away smartly on the rails, lodged a strong challenge, but could not eaten Spender. Maahanui, who was second in the Champion Hack Plate at Egmont, finished well into fourth place after being prominent all the wav. Lady • Siegfried, who also raced well, was next, while Brazen King, after being slow away and unable to get through on the turn, came on the scene with a late run into sixth place. Tile Sandwicliman was showing up at the straight entrance, but faded out in the run home, while Parakino, who was pacemaker until Eara took charge, did not last long.

STEEPLES TO ROYAL BANQUET. Ability to outpace the opposition on the flat won for Royal Banquet, who went a great race tor second place ill the Foxton Cup, the Grandstand Steeplechase, in which he ran a remarkably fine race, leading with Riotous practically all the way. Riotous was outjuniping Rcyal Banquet at the fences, but could not make any impression on the leader, whom he appeared to interfere with somewhat approaching the last fence, and Royal Banquet had too much in reserve. , With Riotous tiring, Sporting Song, who had always been handicame up fast at the last fence and was challenging Royal Banquet all the way to the post. Riotous finished five lengths behind this pair. Platter, the Woodville novice chaser, who was always in the running until close to the finish, lan another good race, but lost a lot of ground at both hen-coop pimps, vd.en moving up. Ronnie lloijlox, the Australian steeplechaser, broke town and was pulled up after leading lor a round. Sporting Song’s effort indicated how unlucky this ! orse, who lias started four times across country for two firsts and two seconds, was to lose his rider when lie jumped to the front at the end of the first round in the Century Hurdles. Battleground, who has been showing no irnfideiice in taking his fences this season, fell at

the first fence of the biush d'uble when completing the frst circuit. His rider, Carroll, who had his second spill for the day, again escaped unhurt, but Battleground was it mined on his knees half-way under the track rails. He was got dear ur.uiiured. Rioghail was never in the picture. Sporting Song nearly tipped out on the second round at the f euve before the brush double, but laier recovered the ground he lost. TAITORU ALL THE WAY.

Rushed to the fi- ont from Tiger Gain, Le Grand, and Die favourite Friesland, as they went thr High the straight from the start Taitoru led from end to end in the Empire Handicap to record his first win since Easter, and his c-'ghth su« ess this season.

International, who, like the tViliner, was capably handled by an apprentice, was not well placed early, but ran a solid race, and was putting in a very fast run at the finish. I’ukeko, with a characteristic run, finished third and Friesland, who secured a run on the rails at the half-mile, was always well up with the leaders, and finished fourth, followed by Le Grand, who was flying at the finish, Master Norval, Tiger Gain and Gay Boy. LAST TO ROTOMA.

Ilotoma, who had finished second to Youssipoff at Foxton, unwound a great finishing run round the field on the turn in the Borough Hack Handicap, in time to get up on the outside and win by a length from Airing after the latter had shot through an opening on the rails. Winsome Lu and Te Huia, who were in the leading division all the way, finished third and fourth respectively, the latter having actually been the leader at the straight entrance from Race Call, Airing, Winsome Lu, and N"ati rahiri. The southerner Dictate finished fifth after appearing late on the scene, being followed home by Flying Chief, Ngatiraliiri, and Racecall.

(By “Spectator.”) “Well, I deserved it,” commented the Palmerston North horseman, C. Thomson, at Auckland, on Saturday, alter piloting Sandy Dix to victory in the Great Northern Hurdles. “It is some compensation for Clarion Call (who won the Century Hurdles at WangaTiui on Saturday) tailing last year at the last fence, when it was all over, bar collecting. My mount was always going well, and when I took him to the front, with a little less than a mile to go, I felt very confident. Sandy Dix jumped perfectly throughout, and he never put a foot wrong.” This is the second, time Thomson has ridden a winner of a big jumping event at Ellerslie, as lie was on Callamart when that gelding won the Great Northern Steeplechase in 1933. Sandy Dix sprang a surprise in annexing the big event, for lie was at double figures. At the end ol the first round the Sandstar gelding had charge, and still held his position at the home turn. Once over the last fence, Jolly Beggar, lying fourth, challenged, but. found his weight too much, and Lord Val and Huskie also made an effort. However, Sandy Dix had too much in reserve and went on to beat Huskie by a length, with Jolly Beggar two lengths and a-lialf further back. Lord Val was close up fourth, and then came Master Musk, Urination, Palm, Modein Maid. Valpeen, Irish Comet, Royal Limond and Free Air, at intervals, High Quality having fallen at the hurdle by the three furlongs. The feature of the race was the manner in which .Tolly Beggar carried his big impost. He was always handy, and crossing the top the last time he made an -effort to get on tehns with Sandy Dix, the leader. He was just in behind at the home turn, and after crossing the last obstacle he made another great endeavour to head off the leader, but found his weight too much.

Sandy Dix was always racing well and Jed throughout the last circuit. Sandy Dix is by Sandstar, sire of those good finishers One Whetu and Taitoru. Following a win in the W. G. Park Steeplechase at Waipa on December 14, he went on to win the Ponsonby Hurdles and Auckland Hurdle Pace at the Christinas meeting at Ellerslie. His last success was at the Te Aroha meeting in the autumn. He had a race at the Waikato meeting. INJURY TO PETRARCH. CAPROLL’S ESCAPE . Petrarch,- winner of the Hack Steeples at Foxton, had an unlucky run in the Purua Hack Hurdles on Saturday at Wanganui. His rider was a little late in taking him up to the front of the field, and when he attempted to do so had to go round the outside. Despite this, Petrarch was making a forward move at the turn for home and then, approaching the final fence, got too dose in behind the leaders, Ethiop and Hunting Queen, with the result that he put a foot through the top of the partially flattened fence and crashed heavily. He was led back to the saddling paddock with an injured shoulder, and though the trouble will prevent him from fulfilling any immediate engagements, it is not expected to prove serious. Carroll, Petrarch’s rider, later had the mount on Battleground when this horse fell at the brush double in the Grandstand Steeplechase, but both times the horseman, though shaken, escaped unhurt. AUSTRALIAN TURF. THRILLS AT FLEMING TO X. WIN ON THE POST. MELBOURNE. June 6. The Grand National fancy, Pooler Bridge, staged a thrilling finish in the York Hurdles at Flemington when he came from third last and galloped so fast over the lost three furlongs that ho caught the leader, Bridge of Mar, and won on the post.
