CRICKET DRAWN

DOMINION DECLARES. COUNTY BATS OUT TIME. CARSON SCORES 86. . (By Electric Telegraph— Copyright.) (From tlie Special Correspondent of the United Press Association with the Team.) Received June 5, 10.15 a.m. LONDON, June 4. The cricket match between the New Zealand team and Northamptonshire ended in a draw. New Zealand had a difficult task alter declaring their second innings closed at * lour down lor 280, the perfect wicket helping the county team to play out time and avoid outright defeat. Page and Carson continued their overnight partnership till the latter was caught at mid-oxf. The pair added 110 for the fourth wicket in 80 minutes. The left-hander’s display lasted two liours and included eight lours, with some very strong leg hits. The innings was immediately declared closed, leaving the county oyer five hours to bat. This they did with the loss of four wickets. New Zealand employed eight bowlers in unavailing efforts to dislodge the batsmen, who all played well on the hard, true wicket. The attack lacked wicket-taking venom, and the absence of a slow legbreak bowler was also severely felt. Roberts, Dunning and Gallichan were comparatively inexpensive, but tlie batsmen seldom appeared troubled. Nelson,, a Cambridge “Blue” qualifying for the county, played a dour innings, and Brooks, a 21-year-old professional, gave the best display of bis career for a century. Timms, perhaps the county’s best batsman, was also very sound. It was disappointing that the tourists were unable to force a win, but the conditions were certainly made for the batsmen.
