GOLD MEDAL AWARD
INSTITUTE OF HORTICULTURE
The following were present at the monthly meeting of the executive council of the Institute of Horticulture, which was held at Wellington recently: 'Messrs F. S. Pope (president), Campbell, Waugh, MaeKenzie, Mason, Poole, Hyde and 0. S. Nieoll (Dominion secretary). Apologies for absence were received from Dr. Oliver, Messrs Brash, McMillan and Dallas. Condolence was directed to he conveyed to the relatives of Mr E. Phillips Turner, a member ■of the executive council, who had always been keenly interested in the institute’s activities and of invaluable assistance in forestry matters. Congratulations were directed to be conveyed to Sir Algernon Thomas, K.C.M.CI., Auckland, an honorary Fellow of the institute, on his well deserved knighthood. Appreciation was expressed of the inauguration, by the Otago district council, of lectures in horticultural science. On the recommendation of the Exnming Board, the Cockayne Gold Medal was awarded to Mr It. W. Balch, of Christchurch, as the best diploma candidate at the 1936 examination. Following on a conference remit an increase of capitation from twenty to thirty per cent, was approved.
