CANTERBURY PARK TROTS.

FURTHER POSTPONEMENT. Per Press Association. CHRISTCHURCH, June 5. The Canterbury Park trots have been postponed till next Saturday, as the track is unfit to race. A few weeks ago 3000 yards of topdressing were applied to the track and this had not consolidated last week, when the meeting was originally intended to be held. This week the track had improved, but heavy rain early last night reduced it to a quagmire this morning. The weather was perfect to-day, but there was no hope of racing. A large number of visitors who have come to Christchurch to attend the meeting are disappointed. A special train from Greymouth arrived this morning carrying 100 people, tired but full of expectations of an enjoyable day’s sport. Fine conditions greeted them, and then came the bombshell. On inquiring where the race tram might be found, an inspector informed them that the trots had once again been postponed. “We are not thinking, but only ■wearing 1” said a prominent trainer when asked for his opinion on the postponement. “The track is impossible to race on, being under some four inches of slush, and I think it will be impossible to race on it next week.” The trainers are also complaining of the expense they have been put to through the postponement. Unfortunately for the Canterburv Park Club, the New Brighton Club has been making improvements to its course, thus blocking one avenue through which escape might easily have Been made. A small amount of cooperation between the two clubs might have obviated all the trouble, but that has not been forthcoming. Whatever the outcome, popularity is hardly the note surrounding the Canterbury -Park Trotting Club at present.
