BUILDING SOCIETY.

RESIGNATION OF MR E. GOODBEHERE. GOOD WORK EULOGISED. A meeting of the Feilding Permanent Building and Investment Society was held yesterday, when the retirement of the manager (Mr Edmond Goodbehere) after 43 years’ service was announced. Tn announcing receipt of the manager’s resignation, Mr Fitzpatrick said that it was with regret that the directors had learned that Mr Goodbehere had decided, for health reasons, to relinquish a position which he had held with both honour and distinction since the foundation of the institution in 1893. The society’s progress and prosperity had been largely due to the expert knowledge of financial affairs possessed by Mr Goodbehere, as well as to his careful management of the society’s affairs. He was one of the surviving promoters of the society, and had been appointed manager at the first meeting of directors, which was held in July, 1893. The first loan made by the society was made in January,

1894, and during the first year of its activity 185 investment shares were taken up. In 1906 investment shares, to the value of £6947 matured and were paid, and from 1906 to 1936 the sum of £93,116, or roughly £3OOO per annum, had been paid out to shareholders. The society had an excellent record and there was no doubt that much of the credit was due to the work of Mr Goodbehere. Continuing, Mr Fitzpatrick referred to the fact that several of the present directors were of the second generation of the founders, and he mentioned Mr Ray Bailey, son of the late Mr W. A. L. Bailey, while Mr \V. E. Carthcw was a son of the late Air William Carthcw, who for many years was a director of the society. To Air Goodbehere it must have been a source of much satisfaction to note that some of those associated with the early life of the society had taken an active part in its later development and prosperity. Concluding, the chairman paid a tribute to Air Goodbehere’s wonderful activity and the fact that despite Ins years he was most alert in the affairs 'of the institution. He expressed the hope that Air Goodbehere would be spared many years to enjoy the. leisure which he so richly deserved. He then moved the following motion: That the .resignation of Air Edmund Goodbehere from the office of manager of the society be accepted with deep regiet and that the directors place on record, on behalf of the shareholders and on their own behalf, their sense of obligation to the retiring manager- for Ins very valuable expert services, whichdate from the establishment of the society in 1893, fully recognising that those -services have very materially

helped towards the success and usefulness of the society.” Seconding the motion, Air It. H. Bailey endorsed the remarks of the chairman, while each of the other members of the directorate present added their tributes stressing the-very valuable part Air Goodbehere had played in the history of the society. In reply Air Goodbehere thanked the directors for their references to himself and stated that the society had been a life-long interest to him. It had prospered down the years, but he could not accept all the credit, for that was due to the work of those keen business men who had filled the positions on the directorate. Of the original directors he thought that Air Alatheson, who lived in Dunedin, was the sole survivor.

The resolution was carried and the resignation will take effect from the end of the present month. Air Guy Goodbehere was appointed to fill the position vacated by his father.
