SURPRISING INCIDENT
CAR DRIVEN AT MAN. STORY FROM AUCKLAND. Per Press Association. AUCKLAND, June 3. A large sedan car taken from the city last evening is believed to have been involved in a sensational incident at Brookby at 1.30 this morning, when a car driver, it is alleged, deliberately attempted to run down Mr William Moody, a contractor, who discovered that 15 gallons of petrol had been drawn from the bowser at the gate leading to his property. Mr Moody was awakened by unusual sounds and, looking toward the gate, saw a large motor car coasting slowly down the hill. By the time lie reached the gate the car had turned round and was coming back towards his property. Noticing that the hose of the bowser pump had been cut through, Mr Moody stepped out in front of the car and held up his hand to signal the driver to stop. Mr Moody alleges that the driver switched off the headlights, speeded up and drove straight at him, and he liad to jump out of the way to avoid being knocked down. The car drove off at a high speed. Mr Moody communicated with the police and a constable followed the tracks and found that the car had hit a bank, but had righted. The car was found this morning damaged and abandoned in the city.
