REPLY TO “STUMPED.”

(To the Editor.) Sir—How my heart bled for “Stumped' 1 when 1 read Ins episode in your issue ot the Ist inst., really a more appropriate signature lor him would have been “Moaner.' 1 I wondei how many thousands in our city would have liked to have Had such a marvellous day; just lancy, a motor-car, to pay income and land-tax, have an interview with your bank managei, have a P.O. savings bank account, a telephone and toll accounts, what a lile, and what a wonderful reason tor a moan. My day wasn't so hectic. 1 had only to pay my unemployment tax, and fill in a nil return tor income other than salary or wages, and let me tell “Stumped 11 mine was paid when due and no harassed civil servant waited a month for me to put in an appearance; therefore no queue bothered me. However, two great calamities' did fall to the lot of “Stumped” on “his day. 1 He had to put on his own number plates, and had to pay for all his terrible worries in State paper money. L wonder it “Stumped” can comprehend the tact that hundreds of thousands of good New Zealanders consider the State paper-money good enough for them. 1 am truly sorry lor “Stumped end am reminded of the lines of the Immortal Bard”: * •
