MAGISTRATE’S COURT.

MISCELLANEOUS CASES. Eire persons appeared before Air J. L. Stout, S.M., in the ,Magistrate's Court yesterday. Bertram Emil Sixtus, aged 53, a farmer, of Umutoi, was charged witli indecent assault on December 24, 1935. On the application of Deiective-Ser-geant MeiKlejolm, accused was remanded for tt week. Air G. Crossley appeared for accused. John Rodgers Collins, farmer, aged 45, of Taihape, was charged witli having been found drunk in a public place, in Broadway, on Afay 26, having been'twice previously convicted of drunkenness. A plea of not guilty was entered. Evidence was given by Sergeant O’Donnell as to having arrested defendant, who had then been drunk. “You seem to have been behaving very foolishly,” said the Alagistrate to defendant. Senior-Sergeant Mclntyre said defendant had been taken back to Taihape on tlie last occasion of drunkenness. He had returned to Palmerston North and had been writing cheques and squandering his money. He was mentally affected when on a drinking bout. At other times lie was normal. Defendant was convicted and discharged, his brother-in-law, who was in Court, giving an undertaking'that ho would be returned to Taihape. The Alagistrate told the brother-in-law to keep defendant away from Palmerston North, as be only became involved in trouble when here. If that continued ho would have to bo sent to an institution such as an inebriates’ island. Patrick Francis Alolloy, a labourer, aged 58, was charged with being found drunk in a public place, King Street, having been previously convicted of drunkenness within six months. - Defendant, who was deaf and read tho charge, pleaded guilty. Senior-Sergeant AleLntyre said arrangements had been made to commit defendant to an old men’s home. Defendant was convicted and discharged. Malcolm John AVilliams, aged 24, a joiner, was charged that, on ATay 26, at Feilding, lie stole £lO, the-property of James lgoe. Detective-Sergeant Aleiklejohn said there were other charges to be preferred, one of which was too old lor accused to be dealt with summarily on it. If a Justice of the Peace could hear the evidence to-morrow, it might be that His Honour Sir John Reed would deal with the case before leaving Palmerston North. A remand until to-morrow was granted accordingly, and bail -granted on a personal surety of £25 and another of £25. David Allan Ferry, a labourer, aged 28, was charged that, on or about Alay 18, at AVoodvillc, with intent to defraud, he obtained by a certain false pretence, by representing that he was an employee of the AVoodville Borough Council, the sum of 10s from Peter Tuoliy. Doteetivc-Scrgeant Ivfeiklejolm said that further enquiries were to be made and he asked for a remand until Monday. The remand was granted.
