WEST END SCHOOL
MEETING OF COMMITTEE. HALF-HOLIDAY FOR SHOW. The monthly meeting of the West End School Committee was held last evening, those present being Messrs G. Tremaine (in the chair), A. Penketh (secretary), A. W. Just, J. H. Dalziel, A. E. Penfold and tlie headmaster (Mr H. W. Jackson). Apologies for absence were received from Messrs W. Schwabe and W. Collins Mr Tremaine was congratulated on being the recipient of the Coronation medal. A letter was received from the caretaker (Mr J. K. Kelly) tendering his resignation. Regret was expressed at the decision, the chairman stating that Mr Kelly had been a most conscientious employee. In his leport, which was adopted, the headmaster stated:—“The roll number stands at 390, with an average last -week of 375. The health or the children is good. During last term the school was open only seven weeks, owing to the restrictions 'imposed by the Health Department, Miss
McMahon took up her duties as assistant oil May 24. I have to acknowledge with thanks the gift of the book ‘Salute the King’ from Messrs G. H. Bennett and Co. In view of the curtailed school year, I recommend that one half-day be granted for the Winter Show, on the 18th instant.” A vote of thanks was passed to Messrs G. H. Bennett and Co. It was decided to close the school on the afternoon of Friday, June 18. The action of the headmaster in procuring necessary basketball material and footballs was confirmed. Accounts totalling £5 17s Id were passed for payment. The secretary reported that matters pertaining to the supply of milk to the school were progressing satisfactorily.
