DAIRY DISPUTE.

CONCILIATION PROCEEDINGS. Per Press Association. WELLINGTON, June I. Hours of work formed the basis of a long discussion in the Conciliation Council in the dairy factories dispute, it being agreed that a settlement of the hours question was an essential preliminary to the adjustment of other questions such as wages. Tentative proposals were put forward and the conference adjourned till this afternoon, so that the matter might be expedited. The employees’ advocate (Mr Roberts) said that his side did not want to do anvthing to hamper the industry. but they did want a fair deal. Mr Roberts’s proposals of working hours were as follow : Butter factories:' 46 hours for three months; 44 hours for three months; 40 hours for six months. Cheese factories: 48 hours for five months; 44 hours for four 38 hours for three months. Dried-milk factories: 48 hours for three months; 44 hours for five months; 38 hours for four months. These proposals, however, were contingent upon agreement on 14 days’ holiday being allowed. The employers submitted the following amended proposals concerning working hours: — Butter factories: 48 hours for six months; 44 hours for two months; 40 hours for four months. Cliese factories: 52 lor eight months; 44 hours for two months; 38 hours for two months. ■ A long discussion ensued on these proposals, neither side conceding any point. Thereupon the parties turned to a consideration of wages.
