HOCKEY

MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. Mr W. G. Sutton presided at the meoting of the Manawatu Hockey Association last night. Also present wore Messrs F. Tucker, R. L. 0. Aitchison, AV. Lundy, W. H. Wilson, H. Wilton, F. McLachlan and R. A. Brace (secretary). ‘Mr Wilson suggested that something should be done in connection with the provision of conveniences at Hokowhitu. He moved that the City Council be approached and asked to have the dressing shed at the Milverton Park ground removed to Hokowhitu. This was carried.

The question of golfers using the grounds of the hockey players was brought up by Mr Wilson. He said that parts of the grounds had been very badly cut up by golfers, and lie moved that the council be asked to have notices erected . forbidding play by golfers.—Carried. The Phoenix Club wrote applying to have R. Rama regraded junior and E. Pink graded senior. Referred to the grading committee for action. The same club also asked permission to visit Feilding on Saturday to play tbe final game in the Coronation tournament.—Granted. A request from the Massey College Club for a rebate on fees paid, since they supplied the use of a ground, was referred to the finance committee for a report. . . The St. John Ambulance Association advised that attendants were available for men’s games and nurses for women’s, if transport were paid.—lt was decided to instruct the secretary to write and ask that nurses attend at the Takaro ground. The secretary reported that a letter had been received from the New Zealand Ladies’ Hockey Association asking for acceptance or rejection, before May 31, of a match with the English Women’s Hockey Association team. The secretary’s reply that, since the local Ladies' Association had only recently got on its feet again, nothing definite could be arranged, was approved. The New "Zealand Ladies’ Hockey Association advised that the theory examinations would be held on July 20 and asked those who had not yet done so to forward tlieir nominations for practical examiner. It was pointed out by Mr Wilton that the association was not affiliated with the New Zealand Ladies’ Hockey Association, but spine umpires desired to take the examination. Mr Aitchison suggested that affiliation with Wellington would get over the problem of expense. The letter was received.

A letter from the Department of Agriculture invited the help of the association in the entertainment^ at a dance in connection with the Young Farmers’ Week in Palmerston North. The matter was referred to the ladies’ representative. An invitation was received from the Hawke’s Bay Hockey Association for players to attend the annual 11-a-side tournament on June 9. It was referred to the club delegates, permission being given to attend. The secretary reported that he had been told that the Awaliuri ground was ready, and a ladies’ match had been sought for this coming - Saturday. He had suggested Saturday week, but Awahuri were anxious for the match to be played this Saturday before the football match. The delegates felt that this would mean far too- early a start. It was decided that the match be played on Saturday week and thereafter 011 alternate Saturdays. Mr Wilson brought up the matter of insurance, asking if all the ladies’ teams had paid their subscriptions as a player had approached him desiring to pay her subscription herself. He had pointed out that the payments should he made through tho proper channels. The secretary said that all the clubs were not fully paid up. He had been told that it was difficult to get the money from the players, but lie had replied that payment was compulsory. It was decided to notify the delinquent clubs of the urgency of the matter. Mr Lundy remarked that all the men’s clubs were fully paid up, and one was even in credit. Mr Wilson asked what were the arrangements for making, tho presentation to Mr Fitzgerald, the retiring secretary, and tho presentation of badges to life members. Ho thought it should be done during some hockey function. It was decided to make tho presentations at the Phoenix Club dance in July. The Broadway Club’s offer that the season’s trophies he presented at their dance was accepted. ' SCHOOL HOCKEY.

Mr Wilson reported that lie had had many requests from boys that an effort be made to start hockey in the High School, and asked if steps could be taken to bogin a schoolboys’ competition. They might be accommodated in the junior Saturdny competition; there were enough boys anxious to play to make three teams.

Mr Aitchison suggested that the Technical School might form a team | and thus provide the necessary four 1 teams. Tho matter was left in the hands of Mr Wilson, who will interview Mr Murray, the High School rector, and see wiiat can lie done. Mr Wilson said .that if they could get the High School hockey started the" opportunity of extending the game among other schools should also be prosecuted. However, _ the supply of sticks ahd the securing of conches would he difficult. After much debate the matter was deferred for consideration at the next meeting, Mr. Lundy and Mr Wilson in the meantime to prosecute inquiries, and to have power 1 to act. ... I Tills last discussion led to tho question of grounds, Mr Wilson pointing out that they would be seriously overloaded if they succeeded in arranging play in the schools. —It was decided

that* an inspection be made of the Rugby ground at Hokowhitu to see if it would he suitable for hockey. Mr Wilton moved that the usual grant bo mado to the Referees’ Association.—Mr Sutton said that any action would bo difficult till a complete report on the finances of the Hockey Association had been prepared by the secretary. The question was finally referred to the finance committee for a report, Mr Wilton dissenting. Mr Aitchison said he understood that there were three men and one woman player on the injured list, and asked if the injuries had been reported. The number of the injured was confirmed by Mr Lundy, who made a protest against the delays in notifying injuries. This was put in the form of a motion and carried.
