(from. Our Own Correspondent.) SHANNON, May 31. The Parish Hall was gaily decorated on Saturday evening, when Mr and Mrs L. Sathorley entertained a large number of guests in honour of their daughter Pearl’s 21st birthday. Dancing was enjoyed, and musical items were given by Mr A. Judd (Makerua), song; Miss J. Bovis, song; and guitar duets by Trevor King and Errol Easton. The toast of Miss Satherley was proposed by Mr J. T. Bovis and responded to by Mr O. .Larsen, ar# of the parents by. Mr J. Mabey (Longburn). Before cutting the beautifully decorated birthday cake, Miss Sathcrley was the recipient of the time-honoured “golden key” presented bv her mother. Mr R. Bayliss (Levin) assisted the dance programme with numbers played on the accordion. ' The annual Patronal Festival of Ven. Bede’s Church was held on Thursday evening, the preacher being Archdeacon Hansel). The Foxton Church Choir assisted with -the service and afterwards a social was held in the Parish Hall. The Buckley Drainage Board has received advice that the Loans Board has approved of a loan of £IOOO for flood damage repairs. The clerk was authorised to raise the money and it was arranged that the work should be commenced at an early date. The Women’s Division of the Formers' Union held ■ a successful street stall on Friday in aid of ■ the swimming baths fund, when over £l7 was raised. The late Mr F. Burke, of Foxton, whose funoral took place on Sunday afternoon nt Shannon, was well known in this district, having been engaged in the flax industry for many years and later farming at Buckley, lie was a member pf the loeal R.S.A. Mr C. Grey is an inmato of the Palmerston North llospltul, being seriously ill.
