On account of the shortage of cement for building activity in Auckland, the Auckland Harbour Board bad decided to import 1500 barrels from England. The Canterbury Jockey Club bad fill idled the year with a profit of £5313. It had paid in stakes in twelve months £25,330, and £2891 was the totalisator tax. The Palmerston Athletic Park Company had sold its property to the golf club for £3OOO. It had paid a dividend of 5 per cent, and the sale of the land was stated to have returned shareholders £7 for each £5 hold. At a Borough Council meeting, • Cr. Luxford had moved that, on account of the deplorable state of the roadways, the by-laws be suspended to allow cyclists to uV the footpaths. IJc had said that his b-art bled to see young ladies trying to nedal thoir mafelrncs through the mud. The Mayor refused to accept the motion, and the 'matter drooped. The arriva's in the Colony during May had totalled 2156. eonpared with 2599 in Mav. 1906. Departures were 3788. as against ’ 2878 for the same month in the previous year.
