CORRESPONDENCE.

STATE HOUSES. (To the Editor.) Sir,—“Satisfied” and “Also Satisfied” both say that some people want everything from, the Government free. I suppose they are hitting at “Amazed” when he said he thought the rents for the Government houses were too high and that he understood they would be about 17s to £1 per week. So did I. I did not notice that ‘ Amazed” said lie expected a bouse for .nothing; I must have missed that little bit. But I did notice that “Satisfied” and “Also Satisfied” told us about prices in bygone years and times of depression, and compared them with present-day wages and prices. “Also Satisfied” says a man can well afford to pay os to 10s a week more now than he could in the depression. That is no argument, as the present Government set out to improve tilings, not to keep them where they were. What is the good of giving a man something with one hand and taking it away with the other? , Now “Satisfied” and “Also Satisfied,”' can you honestly sa.v that you can on £4 a week keep a wife and three children decently clothed and fed, with a little pleasure now and then, and pay £1 10s rent per week? I dare sa.v that if I had. six or seven houses to let, I would be very satisfied with the Government house rents. Human nature, I suppose.—J. anp etc., SQUARE DEAL.
