CAR NUMBER PLATES

CHECK ON MOTORISTS. POLICE OUT EARLY. / Ten members of the Police Fore* were stationed at various intersections in the city and suburbs and covered certain areas on bicycles, this morning, in order to enforce the registration of motor-vehicles so that complete insurance cover is provided. As the result of their activities about fifty names and addresses were taken. There were many excuses and reasons given for not having the new number plates affixed, or for not having the car registered. Those drivers who had not taken out their registration papers were told to leave their cars where they were on the roadside and procure the necessary papers before proceeding, but in a number of instances the plates had been obtained and were carried in the vehicle. In these cases the car was actually registered and the matter was not regarded as seriously as in others. In a number of instances drivers who had not secured number plates used the lesser frequented roads to reach the city area or the registration office, but the police observers were so placed that many fell victims to the request to pull up while the notebook was produced and a quiet request made for jlie name and address. Dp to last evening the total number of registrations made at Palmerston North stood at 4047, as against 3621 at the same point last year, the increase being 426. The number of registrations handled yesterday by the staff, which numbered nine at the busiest periods, was 601. On Saturday, when the office was open for only halt the day the number amounted to 202, and on Friday it was 500. It is intended by the police to continue a strict supervision until they are satisfied that requirements regal-d----iner registration and drivers licenses are complied with by all motorists using the roads. ' The matter of whether prosecutions will follow or not where names have been taken is being considered.
