(From Our Own Correspondent.) ABITI, May 31. A meeting of the committee of tho Women’s Institute was held on Thursday afternoon at the home of Airs C. Stanley. Airs A. W. Bird presided and there were present Alcsdaines G. Watkins, W. Duncan, Harland, J. O’Hagan, C. Stanley and AJiss Stanley. There were apologies lor absence lroin Aiesdames Benscman, J. Jensen, J. Cawood arid Aliss Strahan. Tho balancesheet for the recent dance was presented by the secretary, Airs Harland, in the absence of the treasurer and showed a satisfactory profit. The supper-room of the Town Hall has been engaged for future meetings. A recommendation, which is to bo put to the general meeting, is to purchase a tea-wagon for Institute use. It was decided to allow five minutes only lor the popular vote on the monthly flower competitions. The Julie meeting will be two days later than usual to combine with, tho Women’s Division, l’lans were made for future meetings. All's Stanley served afternoon tea, and a letter was read by I the secretary from the institute’s Scott:cli link, Strathkincss.

The judging of the root crops entered in the competitions was concluded on Thursday. There were record entries in Apiti, Table Flat and Marton Block. Some' enormous crops of mangolds and swedes were seen, and the judging was done by Mr Galpin, of the Agriculture Department. The results will be made known shortly. An excellent lantern lecture was given by Air D. Neilson, deputation secretary for Australia and New Zealand of tho Ceylon and India General Alission. There wore about 70 persons present and the room was well filled. Rev. J. R. Hodson presided and introduced the speaker. A collection of curies was also exhibited.

Mr D. Ncilson was the ,gucet of Mr and Mrs S. Martin while in Apiti. Miss Dunlop has left on a visit to- Ashhurst. Mr and Mrs H. L. Osborne have left by car for Auckland on a fortnight’s holiday. Mr and Mrs T. Osborne are week-end visitors to Levin. Mesdamcs A. Vilcs. T. l’urnell and C. If. Vilcs were Apiti delegates tothe inter-provincial conference of the W.D.F.U. in Dannevirkc. Messrs Wildbore and H. Jensen attended the Farmers’ Union inter-provincial conference. Mr Rcrnellum, of Ridge Road, was involved in an accident on Friday, when he had the misfortune to badly gash his hand when using an axe.

■The Rugby seniors played Kimbolton at Apiti on Saturday and the local team proved victorious by 21 points to 11. It was a very good game, fast and interesting, with plenty of nice open back play. Mr H. Smith, of Kimbolton, was the referee and Apiti’s team was as follows V. McKenzie, D. Kearney, Jim McKenzie, T. Walker, J. Cantwell, Jack McKenzie. D. Harland, J. liliot, D. McKenzie, C. McKav, E. Schmidt, K. and H. Cowan, C. Eliot, and D. McMurtric. The juniors journeyed to Kimbolton, and Apiti was well beaten by 9 to nil. It was a somewhat ragged game and Apiti w-as. not showing as good form as in the previous week’s match. Mr N. Short, of Wultima refereed. Apiti’s team was as follows: —E. Kearney, captain, F. Buckinan. V. Wildbore, R. McKay, A. Vilcs, A. Harland. G. Doughty, L. Hogan, B. Enright, 13. and R. Forbes. N. Cockburn, A. Cowan, Bcaling, and G. Jackson. Apiti juniors have the bye next week and this will give them an opportunity for some hard praefiee. The school boys played a game with (he Kimbolton boys on Saturday morning in Kim; bolton. Apiti had an easy win. The Apiti boy?, however, had a heavier team. They play barefoot and are • tremendously keen. They are well coached by their teachers, Messrs A. W. Bird and J. R. Osborne.
