FIRE AT SHOWGROUNDS.

BAND ROTUNDA GUTTED. At four-o’clock yesterday afternoon the Fire Brigade received a call to the Showgrounds and, on their arrival, found the band rotunda burning fiercely. The structure, the timbers of which were old and dry, was reduced in a few minutes to a blazing heap which, howevef, the firemen soon extinguished. Some men engaged in erecting a side-show within -the ground were the first to notice the smoke, and promptly notified the fire station. It. was not ascertained how the blaze originated, but the theory was advanced that a lighted c’garette end, carelessly dropped during Saturday’s lootball match, may have caused the wood to smoulder until it was finally fanned into flames by the strong breeze which was blowing on Sunday afternoon. 'The brigade also received a call, at 6 p.m., to a rubbish fire in Broadway Avenue. The flames were easily extinguished.
