HOCKEY

MANAWATU ASSOCIATION. COMPETITIONS CONTINUED. The competition matches of tlio Manawatu. Hockey Association were resumed in fine weather on Saturday afternoon, the playing; areas at the Hokowhitu Domain being in excellent condition. However, only one senior competition match was played, Massey College having had to default to Central Old Boys through being absent at the University tournament at Auckland. Phoenix, who had the bye, journeyed to Feilding to participate in the play-off of the five a-side tournament there. The results of the games were: SENIOR. Broadway A 7 v. Broadway B 1. JUNIOR. Combined Services 4 v. Phoenix 2. Broadway 0 v. Massey College 0. BROADWAY A’S SUCCESS. There was an over-abundance of ragged play in the sole senior match, which to a large extent militated against an otherwise lively contest. The scoring margin is a fair indication of the relative merits of the teams on the day’s play, there being a tendency to make it something of a picnic match, despite any amount of enthusiasm. At half-time the score' was s—o5 —0 and thereafter things evened considerably, though the combination evident earlier in the A team failed to hold and the B team were prone to wander from position overmuch. The score was 7 —o till right on time, when Quigan got through with a splendid hit to beat the goalkeeper. The scorers for the A team were Scales (3), O’Brien(2), Radcliffe and D. Waters. Messrs AV. H. AVilson and D. Wilton were the umpires. SERVICES’ VICTORY. An excellent standard generally was attained in the match in which Combined Services got .home by a comfortable margin from Phoenix. The first spell was almost entirely in the winners’ favour, iat the end of which they led by 4 goals to nil. After the resumption Phoenix came into their own and more even play resulted, the disparity in the scoring not militating against keenness. Leader gave a good account of himself and netted twice, , while Byers and Robinson goaled also for the winners. Chester was responsible for both of the Phoenix scores, chiefly through initiative when his backs got the ball away to the forward pack. There was perhaps an emphasis on the spectacular in the closing stnges, but on the whole there was a pleasing display of cohesion. Messrs It. Hoare and N. Hansen refereed. SCORELESS DRAW. It was not for lack of effort that the ■ other junior match, between Broadway ■ and Massey College, ended with the scoring unopened, Both sets of for- ■ wards played a roving game,- but they were too evenly matched to score. 01- , liver and Thorburn gave a good nc- ' count of themselves, but it was almost entirely an exhibition of field tactics, play in the circle being altogether fruitless. Messrs L. Winks and AV. .Sutton refereed. LADIES’ MATCHES. The ladies’ competition matches, played on Takaro Park, produced willing hockey, although. there was a certain amount of raggedness, which will be eliminated with a little more practice. Although beaten by a large margin, Public Her vice put up a good display and, allowing for the fact that they were a new team opposing a side of experienced players in Broadway, their form was commendable. High School Old Girls beat Manawatu Knitting Mills by 4 goals to nil, the scorers being Misses J. Perrin, N. Kearins, A. Fleming and J. link. Kauwhata got homo with a narrow victory against Awahnri by 2 "oals to „il' The scorers for the winners were 1 kisses R 7 Brown and P. E. Simeon,

and for the losers Miss W. Bottclier goaled. Broadway beat Public Service by 8 goals to one. The winners’ goals were scored by Misses W. Reeves (2), M. Bottcher (3), H. Griffin (2) and A. Hancox; Miss G. Moore netted for Public Service.

Mr L. Martin controlled the first two games, and Mr M. Levy the last one.

Tlie Massey College hockey team were not in action in the Manawatu competitions on Saturday .as they have been competing in the inter-’Varsity tournament in Auckland. The standard of play was high, a.nd the local College could not do better than miss tlie “wooden spoon.” According to a report they showed themselves a vastly improved tea.m when they beat Auckland B, s—l,5 —1, in the side competition for the wooden 6poon. The scores were a succession of successful shots bv Retell, who netted all the five goals, Hflnson getting the Auckland single. Pctch was selected as a reserve for the ’Varsity team which played Auckland on Saturday, and thus get bis Varsity Blue. IN OTHER CENTRES. Auckland. —Somerville 5 v. Y.M.C.A. 1; St. Luke’s 2 v.
